Artist's Guidelines
While we are eager to see what new talent has to offer, that doesn't mean we want to be bombarded with emails stuffed with attachments. It would make things a lot easier all round if you followed these guidelines:
- Send us a query letter and wait for a response before sending us any samples.
- A query letter should tell us a little about yourself, your availability for work, and details of any experience you have had as a cover artist.
- This letter may contain links to your art, but any emails with attached files will be deleted unread. Please do not send us unsolicited artwork submissions.
- After this initial query we may be interested in samples. To save load on our poor, creaky server, please keep within the following limits:
- .gif, .jpg or .png format.
- Any sample images should be at a resolution of 72dpi unless requested otherwise.
- Please keep the total size of any attachments under 1 MB (one megabyte) in size.
- No more than three images attached to each email.
- As worthwhile as other forms of art are, we are primarily interested in your ability to produce illustrated covers for books.
Final Art
Daverana Enterprises publishes books. While at the moment we are concentrating on ebooks, we plan on expanding into the print market. As such, finished art has to be ready for either medium.
- Assuming you're commissioned and we have a signed contract, you will be sent a copy of the book to work from and a non-disclosure agreement.
- Finished art should be at a high resolution: preferably 300dpi.
- All finished images should be submitted in .xcf (GIMP), .psd (Adobe Photoshop) or .tiff format.
- Images should be in CMYK mode rather than RGB.
- Print books will measure 5½" by 8½". Assuming a resolution of 300dpi, this gives you a width of 1,650 pixels by 2,550 pixels.
- Each book cover will bear the name of the author and the title of the piece in large print. When composing your artwork, please be sure to leave room for these. The last thing anyone wants to do is cover a particularly good bit of your picture with a great big wodge of text!
Collaboration
Daverana Enterprises will consider works produced by the collaboration of more than one artist on a case-by-case basis. Division of payment and assignment of credits will be decided on that same basis.
Content
Artwork should not contain any gratuitous sexual content, such as exposed genitals or female nipples, full frontal nudity or depictions of sexual intercourse. As a rule of thumb, stick to what might be considered suitable for display in a book shop.
Payment
We pay a flat rate of $50 for each completed piece of artwork. This transaction involves the sale of ebook and print rights to your finished cover. While you can use the art as part of your portfolio and keep a copy on your website, we retain exclusive commercial use of your art for one year.
While producing several pieces of high-quality art will increase the likelihood of our seeking your services, this working relationship does not confer employee status upon you; we cannot and will not guarantee you a set number of jobs for any period, nor do we wish to retain artists on any basis save for work-for-hire.
Photography
Daverana Enterprises allows the use of photographs and photo-reference in artwork, provided you can provide a signed model release form for each model involved. Each model will be credited for his or her involvement in the picture, although their payment is the artist's affair. Daverana Enterprises is not hiring models.
Plagiarism
We wish this went without saying, but we expect your work to be your own and original. If you've ripped another artist's work, we will find out. Any wronged parties will be notified and you will not be rehired.
Final Note
Daverana Enterprises reserves the right to refuse artwork if it does not meet with our standards. These guidelines are subject to revision, so please review them immediately before contacting us.
